Sepsis is a common (49 million cases per year worldwide) and deadly syndrome arising when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues. Outcome has improved, yet the mortality remains high in the order of 20%, rising to 50% when septic shock develops. Spectacular progresses have been made in the understanding of the pathogenesis of sepsis, but translation into new therapies remains a challenge. New research roadmaps in line with the resolution adopted by the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization are currently being investigated to improve the prevention, diagnosis and clinical management of sepsis.

Thierry Calandra ist Professor für Medizin und Chefarzt der Abteilung für Immunologie und Allergie am Universitätsspital Lausanne und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
